The second Sustainable Development Goal is ZERO HUNGER.

Hunger is an issue in Canada, but it doesn’t have to be. In our country of 37 million people, every month, 850,000 people use a food bank and 36% of those users are children and youth.

A person or family is “food insecure” when they worry that they won’t be able to afford enough food, eat suboptimal food because they can’t afford better, or skip meals because they are unable to purchase enough food. Living with hunger means having to make impossible choices. No one should have to choose between rent or food.

There are multiple organizations in our community who are addressing food insecurity and hunger. They could use your help! You can find them by going to our website (www.volunteercr.ca) and clicking on "I want to volunteer".

Volunteer Campbell River

We are in need of large towels and blankets for the animals if anyone has old linens they've been meaning to donate. We also need some laundry essentials: bleach and white vinegar. Donations of these items would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the MARS Wildlife Hospital at 1331 Williams Beach Road, Merville. We have a higher than normal caseload this winter and have been going through lots of laundry! ...

The first Sustainable Development goal is to END POVERTY.

Poverty has many dimensions, but its causes include unemployment, social exclusion, and high vulnerability of certain populations to disasters, diseases and other phenomena which prevent them from being productive.

Poverty affects children disproportionately. Ensuring social protection for all children and other vulnerable groups is critical to reduce poverty.

Poverty is often a vicious cycle. Though Canada enjoys relative prosperity, 10.6% of Canadians continue to live in poverty. This means that 3.7 million Canadians struggle to make ends meet and satisfy their basic needs, resulting in a lack of access to adequate and nutritious food, lack of access to safe, affordable housing and poorer health outcomes

Volunteers can make a difference in the lives of those who are facing poverty. There are multiple organizations in our community who are working to address poverty and be a part of the solution. When you visit www.volunteercr.ca and click on "I want to volunteer", you can sort opportunities and organizations by cause, including "poverty and homelessness". Take a look! You will see many practical ways to get involved and make an impact.

Volunteer Campbell River

Caremongering Campbell River (CMCR) is a group of caring volunteers and community members, who want to help those in need. Their goal is to organize the local community, at the grassroots level, to ensure vulnerable community members have access to food, supports, and other necessities. This group relies heavily on communicating over Facebook, so a Facebook account is required for these roles.

CMCR is looking for volunteers to shop at thrift stores and then deliver the items to those in need. Volunteers will need access to their own vehicle. Volunteers will use donated funds to buy specific second-hand necessities for those in need. You will be helping people with mobility and transportation limits get the items they need AND you can have all the fun that comes with thrift shopping while you do it!

To find out more about this volunteer role, or to apply to volunteer, visit www.volunteercr.ca and click on "I want to volunteer"
