Where to Volunteer:
Friends, Neighbours, – don’t discount volunteering for neighbours and family friends – as well as rewarding to you, they are a good source for references. Start Volunteering at any age!
SPCA
Walking dogs, playing with cats and kittens.
Age: 16 and up or younger if accompanied by adult. Ages 18+ require a criminal record check.
Tidemark Theatre
Taking tickets at the door, ushering people to their seats, helping out at the concession during intermission. After the initial orientation, you sign up for what shows you can attend. Most of the shows are in the evening so you will need to have transportation to Tidemark and back home. Register with the Volunteer Centre and we will have Tidemark call you.
Age: 14 and up. Criminal record check required.
Leaders in Training with Parks & Recreation
Offers valuable training in job and leadership skills. Youth participate in a variety of workshops and then practice the skills that they have learnt at a volunteer placement in one of our recreation programs such as helping out with after school programs for elementary age children. Call 923-7911.$35.00 New Leaders in Training fee for fall and winter programs (Sept. and Jan.) Summer program is $55.00 (starts July). Fees include training (food and supplies) and a t-shirt (2 t-shirts for summer).
Age: 13 – 17. Criminal record check required.
Kids on the Block Puppeteer with Parks & Recreation
Practice once a week using life size puppets. The puppets teach children what it is like to live with a disability. Volunteer needs to be available to perform several shows through the year.Practices are Thursday afternoons 1:15 – 2 pm at the Association for Community Living; after school practices are possible. Show times vary during weekdays; daytime or hours of the performances are flexible.
Age: 14 and up. Criminal record check required.
Yucalta Lodge
- To assist activity workers with resident lifestyle activity programs and interventions, such as: one to one visitations, walks, games, music, crafts, teas, socials, special events, sports oroutings.
- To assist activity workers with other duties related to program set-up and/or clean up. Note: nursing care, food service, maintenance, clerical and housekeeping tasks are not carried out by volunteers.
You will need to:
- complete a Yucalta application, provide references
- Minimum 3 months commitment – once a week - Yucalta will set up a schedule with you after they meet with you and go over your application and references. Call–250-850-0314.
Age: 12 and up (under 19 does not require a criminal record check)
Greenways Land Trust
Trail Brushers, working in the Beaver Lodge Lands and at Haig Brown House.
Age: 16 years and up (18+ requires criminal record check)
Habitat for Humanity
Numerous positions available such as stocking shelves, cashier, shipping and receiving in Restore, and learning retail opportunities.
Age: 16 years of age and up (18+ requires criminal record check)
Special Events
Throughout the year teen volunteers help out with different special events in the community. You just need to register with the Volunteer Centre to be on our list for special event call outs.
Age: usually 14 years and up (may or may not require a criminal record check).
How to Get Started Volunteering:
- Register with the Volunteer Centre; drop in to see us over summer holidays between 9am to 2 pm, Monday to Thursday. We are located in the basement of City Hall, 301 St. Ann’s Rd.
- Once your application is filled out and criminal record check is completed if required, we will get the agency to give you a call. Please note: most agencies will want a reference letter or two from you.
