June 2010

20th Anniversary Celebration!

July 10th marks the 20th Anniversary of Volunteer Campbell River! In 1988 an initiative by the Committee for the Promotion of Healthy Aging identified a need for a Volunteer Centre in Campbell River.  In 1990 the Volunteer Centre became a reality and was established as a society in the community.  Since that time there have been many changes but throughout it all Volunteer Campbell River has continued to support volunteers as they seek ways to become actively
involved in the community and member agencies with training, recruiting, and
running volunteer programs. To celebrate our anniversary, Volunteer Campbell River invites current, past and future members, volunteers, non profit organizations, sponsors and friends of the community to join us in a cake cutting ceremony with the mayor on Thursday, July
8th at 1:00 at the centre.  Thank you to our anniversary celebration sponsor Quality Foods!

New Funding Opportunity

Loblaw’s has just announced an after school program grant that might be of benefit
to an organization in Campbell River.
Please follow the link to find the details on this webpage under 2010 After School
Grant. http://www.loblaw.com/en/comm_main.html
Let us know if you apply and are successful!

Special Events

If you have an event coming up and would like us to assist in finding volunteers
please give at least 2 weeks notice for the search and keep in mind that the more
notice the better so we can post the information in our opportunities binder and on
our website.  We track “special event volunteers” who are looking for short term
volunteer opportunities and your organization might just be the right fit!
May and June are traditionally a very busy time of year and sometimes we have
events on the same date which can make finding enough volunteers for everyone a
challenge.  If you would like to see what else is happening in the community on a
certain date, please check the City of Campbell River calendar at
www.campbellriver.ca, and click on 2010 community calendar.  When you have your
date set please forward details to us at cradmin.calendar@gmail.com and we will
make sure your event is posted for others to see.

Technology Deals Available to Non-profits

The TechSoup Canada Technology Donation Program is a service that connects
nonprofits with technology product donations from leading corporate and non-profit
technology partners.  The savings are substantial with most software discounted at
over 90%.  Networking hardware is also available through TechSoup.
To benefit, it is necessary to register your organization and provide qualification
documents.  Once your organization status has been verified by TechSoup, you can
proceed to order. Your organization must also meet the vendors’ eligibility
requirements and we suggest that before applying you read the details at:
http://www.techsoupcanada.ca/
Each vendor places limits on the minimum and maximum amount of software that can be
ordered.  For example, for Microsoft Office 2007, there is $20 per seat (copy)
administrative fee and a minimum of 5 copies must be ordered.  The combined total
of Microsoft products ordered in a two-year period may not exceed six titles and 50
user licenses per title (or one license per server title).
If you would like some assistance with the registration and ordering process,
contact Island Techease in Volunteer Campbell River at
tech.support@islandtechease.ca

Training Opportunities

Volunteer Victoria is presenting a full-day workshop on “Nonprofit Marketing:  Make
the Most of What You’ve Got!” on July 15, 2010 in Victoria, with facilitator Erica
Mills of Mills Communications Group.
In this workshop, you'll learn a simple and effective three-step process that will
reduce your stress level AND ensure your marketing efforts help you achieve your
mission. Gain new ideas to help you figure out which tools will work best for
engaging and attracting your ideal donors. You'll leave knowing how to integrate
social media into your marketing mix and what traditional marketing tools are worth
continuing to use.
