Volunteer Campbell River AGM

We held our annual general meeting on Tuesday, May 19th which included a presentation by Doug Preston of NIEFS on a Changing North Island Community. If you were not able to attend the meeting but are interested in hearing what Doug had to say, we now have his presentation on DVD and it is available for loan to member agencies.

Web danger spots

"If you like to search for ‘music lyrics' or ‘free' things, you are engaging in risky cyber behaviour," CNN.com reports. "And ‘free music downloads' puts 20 per cent of Web surfers in harm's way of malicious software, known as ‘malware.' A new research report by U.S.-based antivirus software company McAfee has identified the most dangerous Internet search words that place users on pages with a higher likelihood of malware. ... Categories that had the highest risk of run-ins with malware: screen savers, free games, work from home, Olympics, videos, celebrities, music and news. Riskiest terms: word unscrambler, lyrics, myspace, free music downloads, phelps, game cheats, printable fill-in puzzles, free ringtones and solitaire."

Comments from our members

The Campbell River Volunteer Centre provided about 25 volunteers for Oceans Day 2009. Working with these people and our other volunteers from Carihi, the Dive team and DFO made for the warmth and camaraderie that is typical when working with volunteers - it is very genuine and very special! We experienced a successful event with about 2000 attendees and a community at its glowing best. Thank you to Volunteer Campbell River for being such a big part of Oceans Day! Barry, Julie and Luisa.

As the kids finish school and the warm weather approaches, it is time to hit our favourite swimming holes, beaches, trails, parks and take in all the wonderful sights and outdoor activities that Campbell River and the surrounding areas have to offer. We really do live in paradise!

Wishing you a happy, healthy and safe summer!

For more information please contact the Volunteer Centre at 287-8111 or email mail@volunteercr.ca or come by to see us Monday - Thursday, 9 am - 2pm at 301 St. Ann's Rd, lower level of city hall.
